Milpitas Tennis Lesson #1 with barry poole.
Eye contact - through out stroke look at ball. don't move your eyes, as this will make your head move, which allows your body to prematurely go up.. balls will go into the next or land long.
Stay on the ground- for non-winner shots, try to not life your body up which makes your feet up on it's toes. this will cause your body to be slightly off balance and not allow you to recover in time to get the next shot...for winner shots, it is OK to do so..
Backhand - setup your shot left foot back, right foot forward, right shoulder rotated. when ready to hit the ball, take 1 small step with your left, and then simultaneosly, swing your racquet AND step into the shot with your right foot. Follow through the shot but don't swing up making your feet off balance.. Stay LOW.
Serves - don't at first do rock step motion. don't move your left hip forward. instead.. bend your knees vertically down and push off the ground vertically.. on impact with ball on toss, it is ok to move forward into the shot... the reason for this is so that it reduces foot faults, and reduce tension in hitting arm. should look at pete samprass or boris becker serves. imagine a steel rod in the back of your right hip. On the left hip.. imagine not moving past a imaginary plane.
